Dishwasher weight according to type:

There are basically three types of dishwashers and they are portable, countertop, and built-in. The build and design vary from type to type. As a result, the weight of the dishwasher is different for different types.

Let’s have a detailed look at the dishwasher weight according to type.

Built-in:

The built-in dishwashers are the most commonly used type. They are usually below the kitchen countertop where there is a faucet available for water connection.

The built-in dishwasher comes in two sizes, compact and standard. The compact units have an 18-inch wide opening and they weigh in between 50 to 75 pounds on average. Then again, the standard built-in dishwashers are 24-inch wide and they weigh anything from 50 to 125 pounds.

Portable:

As the name depicts, the portable dishwashers don’t need to be installed permanently. Since these can be moved without a major uninstallation process, most of them have a few extra parts than other types. So the portable units are the heaviest type of dishwasher.

The weight of portable dishwashers usually ranges from 50 to 150 pounds.

Countertop:

The countertop dishwashers don’t require any sort of installation at all, which makes them the lightest dishwasher type. They mostly weigh in the range of 35 to 60 pounds. So, they make for a perfect dishwasher to move around and transport.

How much does a standard dishwasher weigh?

Dishwashers are mainly of three types – built-in, portable, and countertop. Each type has a distinct standard weight.

A standard built-in dishwasher weighs almost 77 pounds. However, the weight can range between 50 to 125 pounds. The standard weight of a countertop dishwasher is 47 lbs. The weight of most countertop dishwashers remains between 35 to 60 pounds.

The standard dishwasher weight of a portable dishwasher is fairly high, and it is 108 pounds. Most units come with a weight in the range of 50 to 150 pounds.

Factors affecting dishwasher weight:

From the number of drawers to dishwasher type, there are numerous factors that affect the dishwasher weight. Even the material of the dishwasher can have a huge impact on the weight of the dishwasher.

Let’s have a look at the factors that affect the dishwasher weight.

Material:

The material of the dishwashers affects its weight quite significantly. The lighter the material, the lighter the dishwasher will be.

The interior of the dishwashers is usually made of either plastic or stainless steel. It is a known fact that stainless steel is heavier than plastic. So dishwashers that have a stainless steel interior weigh more than plastic-made ones.

Size:

One of the major factors that affect the weight of the dishwasher is size. The larger the size, the more the weight will be.

The dishwashers are mainly made into two sizes – regular and compact. The compact dishwashers usually have an 18-inch wide opening and they are fairly lightweight.

The regular-sized units are 24-inch wide and they definitely will weigh higher than the compact dishwashers.

Drawers and trays:

The number of drawers and trays a dishwasher has will have a massive impact on its weight. If the dishwasher has two or more drawers then its weight will be significantly higher as it is equipped with more parts.

Similarly, if the dishwasher comes with a utensil and glass tray, it will also add additional weight to the unit.

Door:

Apart from the stainless steel or aluminum body, the door of a dishwasher has a handle and a see-through glass. The quality of the glass and handle of the door will affect the overall weight of the dishwasher.

If the door includes high-quality and durable glass, the weight will be somewhat higher than most other units.

Can one person lift a dishwasher?

A person should never lift a dishwasher on their own. The minimum weight of built-in and portable dishwashers is 50 pounds, which is quite high for a single person to lift.

Even though the minimum weight of a countertop dishwasher is 35 pounds, no one shouldn’t lift it alone because it can injure their back. It is best to appoint professional movers to move your dishwasher or take help from a couple of friends while moving it.

Can you lay a dishwasher down to transport it?

You can necessarily lay a dishwasher down while transporting it. However, you should lay it on its side instead of its back as it has connecting pipes attached to its back.

Before laying down the dishwasher, make sure the surface is flat and doesn’t have any debris which can damage the sides. In addition to that, secure the sides with pads or bubble wraps before laying the dishwasher down to prevent any kind of damage.

Can you transport a dishwasher in a car?

You can transport a dishwasher in a car as long as it fits in the trunk without any issue. Considering the size of the normal-sized dishwashers, it is possible that they might not fit in the car. However, the regular-sized ones will perfectly fit in the back of a pickup truck.

The compact dishwashers are more likely to fit in the car and you can transport them effortlessly.

Final Thoughts

The standard weight of a normal-sized dishwasher is in the range of 50 to 150 pounds. The weight of the compact units is a bit lower than other units. In addition, the type of dishwasher also affects its weight. The countertop models have a much more lightweight body compared to other types.
