You will need the following supplies to install an air gap and vent for dishwashers:

  • A drill with a 3/8-inch bit
  • Jigsaw or Sawzall
  • Rubber gasket material (or another sealant)
  • 1-inch hole saw
  • Electrical tape

Find the air gap hole:

You should start by locating the air gap opening on your counter. It is located in a round or oval hole that is slightly smaller in diameter than the dishwasher hose. Drill a 3/8-inch hole directly above and below the air gap opening once you have located it. 

Ensure that you keep track of the location of the hole so you can install your vent later.

Assemble the vent:

Once you have drilled your hole and installed your vent, you will need to position the assembly on the dishwasher hose. Make sure to cut a 1-inch hole on the side of your counter near where you located your air gap opening by using a Jigsaw, Sawzall, or similar saw-type tool.

Attach the air gap to the dishwasher drain hose:

By fitting the rubber gasket material around both ends of the hose, the air gap can be connected to the dishwasher drain hose. As soon as you have tightened all the connections on your counter, use electrical tape to seal the hole that is left behind from the hole you made.

Drain hose or garbage disposal to the air gap:

You can connect the air gap to a drain hose by fitting rubber gasket material around both ends of it. Fit the air gap over the outlet of the garbage disposal if you are using one. Cover the hole you cut in your counter with electrical tape after you have made sure all connections are tight.

Test run the dishwasher:
