Do Mini Fridges Have Freezers? (Quick Answers)

Are you planning to purchase a new mini-fridge?  Worrying whether you can store some vegetables or frozen food in it is normal. Thus, a question arises if mini-fridges have freezers to store such items. A quick read might be enough to know all about it!

Do mini-fridges have freezers?

Mini fridges have a thin section of freezers which is used for storing frozen items, vegetables, etc. However, the lower section is larger than the freezer section. They have comparatively smaller freezers than regular large refrigerators as their entire structure is mini.

The freezer sections in mini-fridges are so small that only a few extra vegetables, bottles, meat, and other small items can be kept.

Despite the size of the freezers in mini-fridges, they can be as efficient as regular freezers if their compressors and thermostats are good enough.

Do all mini-fridges have freezers?

Almost all the mini-fridges come with freezers. Some other mini-fridges do not have freezers as some people prefer them without freezers. They are usually available in five sizes: 1.6, 1.7, 2.6, 3.2, and 4.4 cubic feet and have usually auto defrosting features.

For example, not all Danby, Smeta, and Magic Chef mini fridge models have freezers. They only have a fridge section.

Do mini fridge freezers work?

All the mini-fridge freezers work properly. They have a separate compressor that generates colder air than the fridge compressors for the lower section of the mini-fridge. However, to make it work properly, there are certain conditions.

Firstly, the mini-fridge should be purchased from well-known brands. They might be more expensive than regular ones but their freezer compressor will most likely work better and have better performance than regular fridges.

Another condition for the mini-fridge freezer to work properly is its temperature. Adjust the temperature to 0°F (-17.7°F) or choose the highest number on the thermostat dial of the mini-fridge freezer to make it work properly.

However, if such conditions are not maintained or if the compressor of the mini-fridge is weak, it might not work efficiently. As a result, it might work the same as a fridge or lower section. It will function as a fridge and any item such as meat stored in it will be spoiled.

How does the freezer in a mini-fridge work?

The mini fridge freezer requires other components such as an expansion valve, condenser coil, and compressor to work together in order to operate smoothly. Here’s how the freezer in a mini-fridge works to make it colder than fridges:

  • A pressurized fluid called coolant runs through the components of the freezer’s operation system. First, it enters the expansion valve where it experiences a sudden fall in pressure levels. This action makes it cooler and causes it to expand. As a result, some portion of it turns into gas
  • Secondly, the fluid enters a pipe, called a chiller cabinet, at the back wall of the freezer. Its job is to turn the remaining coolant into gas completely. The vapor or gas then absorbs all the heat from the freezer and eventually releases it outside. It usually absorbs more heat from the freezer than from the fridge.
  • Then the compressor adds pressure and heat to the warm coolant, raising its temperature to turn it into vapor again.
  • The vapor then flows through the condenser coils or the thin radiator pipe located at the back of the freezer to cool down. After giving off heat and cooling, it turns into a fluid again for the freezer to condense.
  • The coolant or fluid again passes through the expansion valve and evaporator coils to repeat the whole process. It absorbs heat and keeps the mini-fridge freezer cold.
  • The process will follow the set temperature, as indicated by the thermostat. Hence, choosing the highest number will cause the fluid to absorb more heat.

How to make a mini-fridge freezer colder?

To make a mini freezer colder, it is wise to check why the mini-fridge freezer is not cooling. If nothing’s wrong with the components, these ways might help you:

Adjust the freezer’s thermostat:

Sometimes the mini-fridge freezer only requires you to adjust settings and select a cold temperature as the number represents the power supplied. The freezer needs more power as it needs to be colder than the fridge

The freezer will have a thermostat dial, select the highest number on the dial to make it the coldest. The highest number will most likely be 5 or 7.

Replace its position:

If it is kept surrounded by walls, replace it somewhere else. There should be no walls covering their outer surface, especially their back.

They release hot vapor as they absorb all the warm air and generate freezing cold air. The walls surrounding it cause the heat to reflect on the mini-fridge, so it needs to be replaced.

Avoid putting anything on top of the mini-fridge:

As they are small, people tend to keep things on top of it. It doesn’t let the freezer section be cold. Instead, the freezer’s thermostat automatically increases its temperature.

Hence, remove anything kept on top of the mini-fridge.

Store cool food:

The freezer makes food cool but it also requires the food to be cool.

Try cooling down the food before keeping it in the freezer. Warm food makes the inside of the freezer warm, especially when it’s a mini-fridge as they might have weak compressors. It will eventually maintain a normal temperature.

Cool food will keep the atmosphere of the mini-fridge freezer cold, hence contributing to a colder temperature.

How cold do mini-fridges get?

Mini fridges due to their size can get quite cold in a few hours. In 2 to 3 hours it can reach the set temperature.

The mini-fridge will get cold according to the set temperature. The highest number in the thermostat dial or the touchpad is either 5 or 7. They mean that it can get 32 °F (0 °C). It usually ranges between 32 to 42 °F (0 to 5.5 °C).

On the other hand, the mini-fridge freezer is supposed to get colder than the fridge section. It usually needs to be kept at 5 to 7 °F (-15 to -13°C).

However, both the sections will not get such cold if their doors are frequently opened and warm foods are directly being stored in the mini-fridge. Especially when it has a weak compressor, it will not reach the set temperature in 4 to 5 hours.

Why do mini fridge freezers never freeze?

The mini fridge freezers are usually supposed to freeze at times. When it never freezes, it could need some checkups.

The condensers, evaporator fans, and start relay may need to be checked and cleaned. Dirt or pieces of food tend to be stuck in it and they need to be cleaned to allow cold air inside. The obstacles don’t let cold air circulate. As a result, they might not freeze.

Another reason could be the thermostat. It controls the temperature inside the mini-fridge. The temperature of the freezer may have been altered accidentally; when the set number of its dial is as low as 1 and 2, the mini-fridge freezer cannot be expected to freeze.

How to keep ice cream frozen in a mini-fridge?

To keep ice cream in a mini-fridge, it should have a certain temperature as you don’t have it melting in the fridge.

First, the highest number on the thermostat dial should be selected. Ice creams usually require 6.8 to 10.4 °F (-14 to -12°C). For it to be firm and hold its shape, the thermostat should be set between -8 to -0.4°F (-20 to -18°C).

Secondly, store the ice cream in a plastic wrap in a flat and airtight plastic container to prevent warmth from melting it.

Lastly, place it on the rear part of the mini-fridge as it tends to be cooler than the other sections.
